There's a reason why Rihanna hasn't released an album since 2016's Anti.

Rihanna opened up about her highly-anticipated ninth studio album during a recent chat with Harper's BAZAAR, revealing that work she's completed for the album so far hasn't quite resonated with her.

"I was just like, ‘No, it’s not me. It’s not right. It’s not matching my growth. It’s not matching my evolution. I can’t do this. I can’t stand by this. I can’t perform this for a year on tour." Speaking on music she plans to feature on the forthcoming record, Rihanna assured that whatever is released will "matter."

"After a while, I looked at it, and I was like, this much time away from music needs to count for the next thing everyone hears. It has to count. It has to matter."

Elsewhere in the interview, Rihanna’s icon shone a spotlight on family, praising partner A$AP Rocky for being such a great dad to their two sons, RZA and Riot, who already have very different personalities.

"RZA is just an empath. He's so magical. He loves music. He loves melody. He loves books. He loves water. Bath time, swimming, pool, beach, anything. Riot, he's just hilarious. When he wakes up, he starts to squeal and scream. Not in a crying way. He just wants to sing."

A release date for Rihanna's forthcoming album has yet to be announced as the artist works to create music that mirrors the growth she's experienced over the last decade.
